Windows 11 & Windows 12 Rumors, New Features and more
There are rumors suggesting that Windows 12’s AI capabilities could set new benchmarks for machine learning, enhancing its ability to predict user intentions. However, achieving the right balance between usefulness and intrusiveness will be crucial. While Microsoft has remained silent on Windows 12, they may have already given a sneak peek at its desktop layout. Extreme Tech showcased an image from Microsoft Ignite 2022 that appeared significantly different from Windows 11. The new layout features a floating search panel, a floating taskbar, and a weather widget positioned at the top left of the screen.
Zac Bowden from Windows Central nearly confirmed that this could be the first public glimpse of Windows 12, given its similarity to other iterations he has seen and Microsoft’s ongoing tests with these designs.
Many believe Windows 12 will primarily bring enhanced stability, power, and security to the current Windows OS. Enhanced AI algorithms are reportedly being developed to offer a more personalized experience to Windows 12 users. This could include improved AI-driven search functions and a more advanced Recommended section in File Explorer.

New Windows 12 Features: AI Cloud Integration
Microsoft has been transparent about its intention to incorporate AI into its Windows operating system, and Windows 12 is expected to continue this trend. Although there is no official confirmation yet, it’s exciting to speculate on the additional AI functionalities that might be introduced beyond what Windows 11 currently offers. Windows 12 could take AI advancements further, building on the enhancements made in the 23H2 update for Windows 11, which introduced Microsoft Copilot. Future updates might further enhance Copilot’s ability to interact with and control the PC, providing a more efficient and personalized user experience.
Windows 12 is likely to include improved HDR support, additional compression tools in Windows Explorer, and much-anticipated Wi-Fi 7 compatibility, all features expected in the upcoming Windows 11 24H2 update. One potential development area is expanding AI-powered search capabilities, similar to those in Windows 11’s Taskbar, where users can use the search icon to find content across Microsoft 365 seamlessly.
Moreover, with enhanced AI algorithms, the Recommended section in File Explorer—which suggests files and folders based on user behavior—could see significant improvements and expansions.
Hardware Requirements and Versions for Windows 12
While Microsoft has yet to reveal the specific system requirements for Windows 12, we can make some educated guesses based on current technological trends. Likely, users will need a 64-bit processor with at least two cores, a minimum of 4–8 GB of RAM, and around 16 GB of storage to accommodate the anticipated AI-driven features in Windows 12.
Will Windows 12 Come in Different Versions?
Similar to previous releases, Windows 12 is expected to be available in various editions, such as Home and Pro, possibly with different names. This approach would cater to both everyday users and more advanced needs. As with Windows 11, we can expect these versions to offer varying levels of support, security, and functionality. Microsoft will likely announce the specific editions and their features closer to the official release date.
Upgrade & Premium Options
Given the trend towards subscription models in software, Microsoft might introduce a subscription-based option for Windows 12, replacing the traditional license purchase model. However, it’s plausible that Windows 12 will be offered as a free upgrade, similar to Windows 11, for users with valid licenses for Windows 11 or possibly even Windows 10. For those seeking a standalone copy, Microsoft might price it similarly to Windows 11.
The design of Windows 12’s interface is anticipated to reflect Microsoft’s goals for the next version, suggesting that significant changes to the desktop layout could be expected. Although initially expected in late 2024, insiders predict a release in the latter half of 2025, with the release date for Windows 12 projected for September or October 2025, following the pattern of major releases every three years.
Updating to Windows 12 will likely be free for existing Windows users, provided they have a valid license for Windows 10 or 11. Premium options may also be available, especially for accessing advanced AI features, though this remains speculative.
Windows 12 is set to be the next significant evolution in Microsoft’s operating system, promising an enhanced, more integrated, and seamless user experience, building upon the foundations laid by Windows 11.
